Working with bitmap and raster images is part of our
daily work. Generally we design everything we do in
vector based graphics. Vector based images are
resolution independent which means their quality is only
limited by the resolution of the device creating the
image. Vectors are the only real choice for machining,
carving or cutting. Bitmap images or digital
photographs are pixel based and their quality is limited
by the number of pixels the CCD in the digital camera
was able to capture.
With ever increasing camera resolutions it became
possible to do amazing things with digital photographs.
The images below are just a few of our attempts to
colorize photographs 15 years ago to match written
descriptions and actual small, aged physical artifacts.
The latest software and Artificial Intelligence programs
appear to making the old hand colorizing method
obsolete. In fact we are now able to animate and colorize
a still image with AI, amazing!
The vintage photographs we repaired below required
quite a bit of work and time 15 years ago. Today AI can
make it a simple process of online drag and drop. No skill,
Photoshop or software required!
The final image of the Cavalry with the train is one of the
very few totally composite images we have done. The
entire work is pieced together from public domain
images. Even the faces of the soldiers are unique to this
image. We do composite work all the time but rarely like
this image. You will see the process lightly applied in our
posters and mast heads. We do them rarely and lightly
because we strongly believe in protecting the IP or
intellectual property of artists and photographers. Even
changing a little of another artists work matters. We know
how it feels to have our art stolen, profited from, torn
apart, changed and rearranged. We do heavily use
composite imaging in our architectural renderings at
Shedwrights. We frequently place our architectural
models with or attached to other real world property to
show a client how their addition, alteration, renovation or
building will look on their property. The photographs we
use are either our own or the clients.
