Always an Original.
While employed as a Program Manager for a shortline railroad one of my projects was the management of the restoration of a historic train set. Like many such projects funding was limited and as a partner in the project we sought and welcomed any outside participation. The American Welding Society (AWS) nominated and recognized our restoration as one of history’s most significant welding technologies and engineering achievements. This organization studies, researches, tests and creates welding specifications used by industry world wide. In the United States, anywhere metals are joined, the Department of Defence, NASA and public engineering projects apply AWS specifications. This was a pretty big deal and with just a few weeks notice we realized their organization with dozens of members and their families were planning on presenting their plaque at a public event. Some of their members were coming from other countries! The railroad agreed to host the entire event and the owner of the nearby railroad station offered its use as a display and hosting area. The actual presentation to a large audience was held in the emptied railroad shops. I believed it was important to celebrate their award and with the railroad’s help set to work creating a event display. I created all the display art, writing copy, research and graphics in a little more than a week of very long days. The single, largest issue was finding someone or some place who could print my large displays and mount them on such a tight schedule. I decided to print and mount my own work and dozens of photographs. I ordered a large format pinter, rolls of paper and mounting material. I also crafted a large banner to hang on the perimeter of the main area and even CNC carved a full size sign for the entrance. The day before the event we cleaned the old station, installed the displays of significant parts, hung all my printed work and transformed the old depot into a display area. The event happened so quickly, and we were all so busy, nobody thought to invite a news team of any type. The images and art below are mine, until now, were only seen at this event and very few photographs exist. I was fortunately able to video tape the event and grab a few shots.
POSTERS/DISPLAYS/EVENT PLANNING/TRADE SHOWS
The posters below were created for my employer. She supported a local community theater company and requested something more than just pictures and fancy typefaces for the production programs and posters. Below the posters are four flats that were arranged in a interlocking square pattern for a event display. I cant take credit for the excellent photographs though.
To thank my team and have some fun I created the faux magazine covers and masthead below. Each person pictured was instrumental in what success we achieve at the railroad. Only one of each cover was ever printed!
